Coming out of your comfort zone with Kriti
Kriti is a perioperative nurse, a researcher and an advocate of female leadership.
From Fiji, Kriti has undertaken a Master of Nursing Science and shared with us why her time at the University of Adelaide has been special.
“I am a perioperative nurse. The University of Adelaide is the only university in Australia that allows international nurses to take perioperative courses in the master’s program. My study and scholarship experience has been transformative and enriching. It has provided me with a solid foundation of knowledge and critical thinking skills. Hence, enabling me to step aside, analyse situations, and come up with a plan that is suited to the contextual features of the healthcare system that I am part of. Access to resources, mentorship, and a structured learning environment helped me to excel in my field,” Kriti explained.
“I am introverted and these experiences have played a significant role in my personal growth. I came out of my comfort zone, gained more confidence, broadened my horizons, and improved my interpersonal and social skills,” Kriti says.
How do you see your study and scholarship experience helping you both personally and professionally in the future?
I used to despise anything about research; however, now, I have a profound interest in it. Hence, I see myself continually growing, learning and making a difference.
Professionally, I have gained adequate skills and insights invaluable in my career, particularly in improving patient outcomes related to my specialty. The scholarship allowed me to network and affiliate with experts from my specialty and become a participant in a women's leading and influencing program. I also published my first-ever article (systematic review), which marks a significant milestone in my career. This accomplishment has boosted my confidence and motivated me to pursue further publications in the future. These experiences have laid a solid foundation for my future endeavours.
How did you access the Australia Awards scholarship?
I found out about the AA scholarship through social media. However, a friend of mine encouraged me to go through the application process.
How did the International Student Support (ISS) benefit you during your time in Adelaide and at the university?
The orientation programs organised by ISS helped me transition and acclimatise to the new environment. I was informed of campus resources such as the Writing Centre and Counselling Services and encouraged to access these services whenever I needed them. I absolutely loved the AA events, as they provided networking opportunities with other international students. Additionally, I was assisted through ISS with practical matters such as accommodation, ensuring that I was well settled before commencing my studies.
What did you enjoy most about your experience as an international student in Adelaide?
I enjoyed the food and beautiful sceneries of Adelaide.
What advice would you give to a student aspiring to access the Australia Awards scholarship?
I advise them to ensure that the course they apply for is within their country's priority areas. Additionally, they should conduct in-depth research on the course they want to pursue and watch YouTube videos on ways to strengthen their application.
What was your favourite thing about living in Adelaide?
One of my favourite things was the opportunity to explore the vibrant scenes of the city and experience the numerous festivities that happen all year around.
What are your plans for your future?
While I am passionate about the clinical aspects of perioperative nursing, I see myself delving more into perioperative nursing research.
What is one word to describe your experience of studying at the University of Adelaide?
Enlightening.
