Jim, hailing from the Solomon Islands, earned his Master of Civil/Structural Engineering, boosting his confidence and empowering him to fulfil his vision of making a positive impact through engineering.
Initially, it was the respected reputation of the faculty staff that drew Jim to the study at The University of Adelaide. Upon exploring the campus, he was open to the challenge of adapting to a community of diverse cultures, attending special events for newcomers, helping him build new social connections. Adelaide’s user-friendly transport system enabled Jim to dive into the city’s offerings, from local cultural festivals and pristine beaches to calming nature parks.
Now, Jim is on his path to realising his dream of advancing sustainable engineering solutions in the Soloman Islands.
Why did you choose to study at the University of Adelaide?
I chose the University of Adelaide because I was particularly impressed by the reputation of certain lecturers in courses that I had been interested in during my undergraduate studies, and the fact that they were University of Adelaide staff convinced me that I needed to come here. Also, I had heard that Adelaide is a very student-friendly city, which influenced my decision.
How was your study and scholarship experience? and how do you see it helping you both personally and professionally in the future?
My study and scholarship experience has been incredibly rewarding. The Australia Awards scholarship provided me with financial support and opportunities for academic and professional development. Personally, I have grown more confident and independent, and professionally, I have gained valuable skills and knowledge that will be instrumental in my career path as an engineer that could bring about positive change in my country.
How did you access the Australia Awards scholarship?
I accessed the Australia Awards scholarship through a rigorous application process involving multiple stages. Getting through the competitive stages was challenging considering many applicants. However, I was privileged to make it to the interview stage where I was able to discuss my academic achievements and future aspirations.
How did the International Student Support benefit you during your time in Adelaide and at the university?
The International Student Support at the University of Adelaide was extremely helpful. They offered advice on academic matters and adjusting to life in Australia. Being away from home while also being an anti-social person was a mental challenge for me, especially during my first semester. However, their support services, which included workshops and social events, assisted me in integrating into the university community and navigating the challenges that arose.
What did you enjoy most about your experience as an international student in Adelaide?
I enjoyed the vibrant and multicultural environment in Adelaide. The city is welcoming and offers a variety of cultural events, outdoor activities, and beautiful landscapes. I also appreciated the opportunity to connect with students from different backgrounds and learn from their experiences. Additionally, Adelaide is simple and student friendly. You cannot get lost in the city, even if you're arriving for the first time, and the transportation system is excellent. Having a city like this goes a long way in helping you adjust to the new environment as you progress throughout your studies.
What advice would you give to a student aspiring to access the Australia Awards scholarship?
My advice to aspiring Australia Awards scholarship applicants is to start early and thoroughly research the scholarship requirements. Be clear about your academic and career goals and ensure that your application reflects your passion and commitment. Seek guidance from mentors and peers, and don’t hesitate to reach out to the scholarship office for assistance.
What was your favourite thing about living in Adelaide as a student?
My favourite thing about living in Adelaide as a student was the balance between academic life and leisure. The city offers excellent study facilities and resources, while also providing numerous opportunities to relax and explore, such as visiting the nearby beaches, cultural festivals, and spending time in its beautiful parks. The simplicity and student-friendly nature of the city, along with its excellent transportation system, made it easy to navigate and adjust.
What are your plans for your future?
My plans include collaborating with like-minded engineers and the networks that I’ve gained here, to help me in contributing to sustainable engineering solutions in the Solomon Islands. I aim to leverage the knowledge and experience gained from my studies and scholarship to make a positive impact in the field of engineering.
